âAnd then the plan was to head back to Los Angeles. You know, back to the real world.â Pamâs face fell at that pronouncement and I realized how it sounded. âWell, at least that was my original plan. Now . . . well, now Iâm not so sure.â
I twirled the empty mimosa glass in my hand, wishing Lincoln and I had more time together before his mom interrogated me over my plans. Things were too new. I knew my old plan wasnât going to work now that Iâd found Lincoln, but I hadnât settled on a new plan yet either. Which was super weird for me. I always had a plan for my life. That was the only way to get the things done that I cared about.
âOh honey,â Pam put her hand on my arm to still my fidgeting. âYou donât have to have it all figured out yet. I see how my son looks at you, so of course Iâm going to encourage you to stay, but I also care about you, independent of Lincoln. Take the time to know what you really want before making any decisions. Listen to your gut and you canât go wrong.â
I tilted my head. âMy gut says to lease out the land to someone who knows what theyâre doing. My gut also says to stay in town and see how things go with your son.â

I nodded and followed her, not only to be polite, but because there was a warm glow about Pam that affected the people around her. Maybe it was her obvious acceptance of everyone, or maybe it was the way the mom in her couldnât help but take everyone under her wing, but I was quickly becoming addicted.
âHannah? Do you have a second?â I heard Lincoln ask from behind me while his mom stooped behind the bar to find the right bottle of wine.
I spun, giving him a smile which instantly died when I saw the serious expression on his face. âSure. Is everything okay?â
He scratched his temple, his gaze darting to the side. I was learning his tells and that was definitely one of them. If he couldnât look me in the eye, something was wrong, and he couldnât find the words to say what was running through his head.
âHere. Letâs chat in the backroom.â I grabbed his arm and led him through the swinging saloon doors. He did better when there was quiet. That way he could focus on the words when there wasnât chaos around him.
I hopped up onto the same counter Iâd sat on when I chatted with Dillon. Funny how I could have a completely different reaction to this brother. The sight
